Hook and Line Systems

The NIC Instruments Hook and Line System is a semi-remote
rigging technique which facilitates safe entry into buildings and vehicles suspected to contain unexploded ordnance. The system will also allow the operator to access suspect devices and provide various solutions for their manoeuvrability. The extensive range of instruments available to EOD personnel significantly reduces the number of manual approaches required to render safe or neutralize suspect devices.

The NIC Hook and Line System employs a high strength, low stretch line which is used to manipulate objects from a safe distance.

A range of instruments is available to attach the line to the target.
These consist of high strength hooks which may be used if there is
a clear attachment point. Large objects, e.g. beer kegs, may be
cradled with the webbing sling. 2 self locking grips are available, a
lightweight and heavy weight version. The lightweight is ideal for
moving clothing, the heavy weight for larger loads. The cantilever
clamp has sharp teeth. Under the strong spring action these bite
tightly into the target. When the line is pulled, the cantilever action
increases the gripping force, ensuring the target is not accidentally
released. The cantilever clamp is most suited to heavy weight fabrics (e.g. Household carpets, or cardboard boxes).

The line's route back to the safe area must be carefully laid out. In order to achieve a successful 'pull' a comprehensive set of instruments are available. Karabiners offer a fast and effective method of routing the line around corners.

Standard pulleys achieve the same, but with reduced friction, which is essential when pulling heavy loads. In order to go around several corners, e.g. inside buildings, standard pulleys are less versatile. NIC has designed an advanced pulley system that opens automatically when the suspect device reaches it. Several of these may be used to negotiate complex routes.

Various devices are available to create anchor points to which the pulleys may be attached along the route. These range from basic wire & rope slings to more complex clamps. Pitons are used to secure an eye in hard surfaces, and suction pads may be used on smooth surfaces, e.g. metal doors. A high strength sticky eye provides an excellent solution to internal walls, or smooth flat surfaces. The sliding bar clamp system is able to securely grip to round and square legs. The design of the feet ensures they will not slip off under load. The gangway brace allows door and window frames to be bridged, especially important if a device is to be pulled out of a window.

Shock cords (elastic bungies) are utilised to assist in opening doors. Once the door handle has been activated with the appropriate hook and line technique, the shock cord will pull the door open. Various suction and sticky pads are available to assist in attaching shock cords to glass, or flat surfaces.

The NIC Hook and Line System is designed to be used in urban, rural and post combat scenarios. The new ‘grenade grabber’ solves one of the most difficult hook and line tasks, attaching to spherical objects. The net may also be deployed with the use of the telescopic pole, and the closure mechanism ensures minimum disruption to the suspect device.

Once all personnel are clear, the line is pulled, moving the object to a safe area, reducing the risk of activating suspected booby traps. NIC focuses design of its products on their operational application. This means that instruments are designed to be used by personnel in full bomb suit protection, or when working in confined spaces.

The NIC Hook and Line system is ideally suited to many EOD procedures, as well as IEDD and demining applications. Hook and Line is recognized as a core capability of EOD teams. Kits that have been specially tailored to each application are available.

The NIC range of hook and line kits can be supplied in rigid plastic cases or in a convenient and effective backpack format. Kits are available from the basic 1st generation, which is suited to basic EOD procedures or demining applications right though to the Comprehensive kit, which contains a full range of instruments for EOD & IEDD tasks.

NIC, in addition to providing a range of standard hook and line kits, also specialise in assembling kits to individual customer specification, therefore providing effective solutions tailored to specific customer needs.

NIC Instruments are registered ISO 9001 and we are proud to manufacture all equipment in our own factory. This close attention to manufacturing standards allows us to produce EOD and search equipment to the highest standard, famous the world over.
